Mechanism of action of Bimatoprost
- Bimatoprost mildly stimulates the rate of aqueous humor flow during the day (13%) and at night (14%).
- Its ocular hypotensive action is due primarily to a 26% reduction in the tonographic resistance to outflow.
- Thus, bimatoprost enhances the pressure-sensitive outflow pathway.
Therapeutic Indications of Lumigan Ophthalmic Solution
- LUMIGAN® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.01% is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Method of Administration of Lumigan Ophthalmic Solution
- The recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. Lumigan® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.01% should not be administered more than once daily since it has been shown that more frequent administration of prostaglandin analogs may decrease the intraocular pressure lowering effect.
- Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
- If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
- If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
- Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.
Undesirable Side Effects of Lumigan Ophthalmic Solution
- Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complain from:
- Burning/stinging/irritation/redness of the eye, feeling as if something is in your eye, dry eyes, watering eyes, and increased sensitivity to light may occur.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Precautions While Taking Lumigan Ophthalmic Solution
- This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks.
- Breast-feeding: It is not known if bimatoprost passes into breast milk.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
- Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medicine during pregnancy and breast-feeding

- Exercise safely: Regular exercise may reduce eye pressure in open-angle glaucoma.

Warnings & Special Precautions while Taking Lumigan Ophthalmic Solution
- Before using bimatoprost, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to similar drugs (such as latanoprost, travoprost); or if you have any other allergies.
- This product may contain inactive ingredients (such as preservatives like benzalkonium chloride), which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
- Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
- Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: eye problems (such as macular edema, iritis, uveitis, lens extraction/aphakia).
- If you develop an eye infection or injury, or have eye surgery, check with your doctor about the continued use of your current bottle of bimatoprost.
- You may be advised to start using a new bottle.
- This drug may cause temporary unstable vision.
- Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely.

- Store below 25°c
- Don’t freeze.
- Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
- Store in the original package to protect from moisture.
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the box/blisters/label.
- The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
