Mechanism of action of Ganfort

• GANFORT consists of the two active substances: bimatoprost and timolol.
• Bimatoprost mildly stimulates the rate of aqueous humor flow during the day (13%) and at night (14%). 
• Its ocular hypotensive action is due primarily to a 26% reduction in the tonographic resistance to outflow. 
• Thus, bimatoprost enhances the pressure-sensitive outflow pathway.
• These two components decrease elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) by complementary mechanisms of action and the combined effect results in additional IOP reduction compared to either compound administered alone.

Therapeutic Indications Of Ganfort Ophthalmic Solution   

• Ganfort® (bimatoprost + timolol ophthalmic solution) is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Method Of Administration Of Ganfort Ophthalmic Solution   

• The recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. 
• It should not be administered more than once daily since it has been shown that more frequent administration of prostaglandin analogs may decrease the intraocular pressure lowering effect.
• Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
• If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
• If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
• Do not take a double dose (two doses at the same time) to make up for the forgotten dose.

Undesirable Side Effects Of Ganfort Ophthalmic Solution   

• Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complain from:
• Burning/stinging/irritation/redness of the eye, feeling as if something is in your eye, dry eyes, watering eyes, and increased sensitivity to light may occur.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Precautions While Taking Ganfort Ophthalmic Solution   

• This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks.
•  Breast-feeding: It is not known if bimatoprost passes into breast milk.
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
• Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medicine during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

Non-Pharmacological Treatments & Advices

• Several vitamins and nutrients are important to eye health, including zinc, copper, selenium, and antioxidant vitamins C, E, and A Ex: vitamins 
• Exercise safely: Regular exercise may reduce eye pressure in open-angle glaucoma. 
• Talk to your doctor about an appropriate exercise program

Warnings & Special Precautions while Taking Ganfort Ophthalmic Solution   

• Before using bimatoprost, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to similar drugs (such as latanoprost, travoprost); or if you have any other allergies. 
• This product may contain inactive ingredients (such as preservatives like benzalkonium chloride), which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. 
• Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
• Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: eye problems (such as macular edema, iritis, uveitis, lens extraction/aphakia).
• If you develop an eye infection or injury, or have eye surgery, check with your doctor about the continued use of your current bottle of bimatoprost. 
• You may be advised to start using a new bottle.
• This drug may cause temporary unstable vision. 
• Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely

• Store below 25°c
• Don’t freeze.
• Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
• Store in the original package to protect from moisture.
• Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the box/blisters/label. 
• The expiry date refers to the last day of the month.
